Autumn migration culminates

This year's autumn bird migration is at its peak, since mid-October activity is gradually declining. Some past migrations have been so massive that they could even be tracked on radar.During the past weekend (13-14.10.2018), the fascinating observation was recorded - up to 160,000 common cranes in the Hungarian National Park Hortobágy and obviously became a sensation.

For ornithologists, after the end of the nesting season, an extremely interesting part of the year begins. Rare species in unusually high numbers, exceptional observations, new sites, all bring with them the phenomenon of bird migration, whose autumn stage is just beginning. The birds are preparing for the long flight - they change their feathers, they make the fat reserves. Birds welcome sunflowers or the rest of the grains, so it is important that the fields do not plough right after the harvest.

For migrating birds is important the country without barriers. For example, under the LIFE Energy project, energy companies in the area of the most important migratory routes in the east and west of Slovakia install flight diverters that make power lines visible and birds can fly over the lines without injury.
